Background
Built under licence from Jenbacher Werke of Austria this unusual locomotive has chain drive to each axle.
A number of locomotives were built at Bundaberg Foundry under licence from Jenbacher Werke and were known as Bundaberg Jenbachs. Only two were built as 6 wheel locomotives, both being supplied to the North Eton Mill, near Mackay. The remainders were all small, flame proofed 4 wheel locomotives, intended for use in underground coalmines.
Our example was the second supplied to the North Eton Mill where it was known as D2.
It was transferred to the Cattle Creek Sugar Mill in 1989 after the closure of the North Eton Mill and then to the Marian Mill in 1991 after closure of Cattle Creek. It has been substantially rebuilt over the years with the original Jenbach diesel motor being replaced by a Gardner 8LW 8 cylinder diesel motor and then in 1984, it was fitted with a Detroit 6 cylinder diesel motor along with the cab and bonnet off a ConEng 0-6-0 diesel locomotive.
It was donated to our Society by Mackey Sugar in 1995 and transported straight to Woodford. It is in operational condition and is used on heavy work trains and shunting duties.
